On September 28, 1984, the first open heart surgery took place at St. Mary's of Michigan. It was a day not-to-be-forgotten as St. Mary's became the only open heart surgery program to serve a 14-county region. This meant area residents would no longer have to travel to distant hospitals for cardiac surgery.

In the 25 years since, St. Mary's of Michigan has performed nearly 20,000 heart surgeries and continues to be the regional leader in cardiac care. The majority of the surgeries have been heart bypass operations but St. Mary's of Michigan has also performed heart valve replacement and repair surgeries.
