| Open Heart Surgery: From Our Heart to Yours... Celebrating our 25th Anniversary
On September 28, 1984, the first open heart surgery took place at St. Mary's of Michigan. It was a day not-to-be-forgotten as St. Mary's became the only open heart surgery program to serve a 14-county region. This meant area residents would no longer have to travel to distant hospitals for cardiac surgery. In the 25 years since, St. Mary's of Michigan has performed nearly 20,000 heart surgeries and continues to be the regional leader in cardiac care. The majority of the surgeries have been heart bypass operations but St. Mary's of Michigan has also performed heart valve replacement and repair surgeries. It takes dedication and commitment of an entire hospital to provide high-quality care and the 25 years of achievements and milestones in open heart surgery reflects the combined efforts of surgeons, physicians, nurses, clinicians, everyone, to make St. Mary's of Michigan a regional leader in open heart surgery. When it comes to your heart, or that of a loved one, the St. Mary's of Michigan open heart surgery team has unmatched experience and expertise. Combined with our comprehensive cardiovascular programs aimed at prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation, you can count on St. Mary's of Michigan in providing the healing edge. 'Off Pump'Heart Bypass SurgeryAt St. Mary's of Michigan Medical Center, we perform "beating heart" surgeries for patients who are candidates for this less invasive procedure. The surgeon operates on the patient's heart without the use of the heart-lung machine. Only hospitals with the most experienced clinicians can perform this type of surgery. Off-pump surgery patients typically recover more quickly than traditional open-heart patients. |
