Teacher’s Cancer Treatment Inspires Kids to Help Patients

Some fo the Vasser Junior High School kids during the Bake Sale
It was a way to “pay it forward.”  A bunch of kids from Vassar Junior High School staged a bake sale at Seton Cancer Institute in Saginaw recently.  There were tons of baked goods spread out over tables all over the Seton Cancer Institute lobby.  The tasty treats were baked by the kids, their moms, and faculty at Vassar Junior High.  The teen who came up with the idea was thirteen year old Kaila W

ilson, who recruited a bunch of her friends to help.  Her inspiration was her teacher who had been diagnosed with cancer last year.  “This year he’s back and doing well,’ Kaila says.  “We’re very happy about that.”

But Kaila wanted to do something to help others who had cancer.  That’s when Amy Curtis, Seton Cancer Institute Manager, suggested a fundraiser to buy gas cards for people who don’t have enough money to buy fuel for their cars in order to get their cancer treatments.  The end result?  The bake sale and a raffle yielded about $730 and an additional $100 and a $25 gas card came in after the sale.  “Those kids are great,” says Amy.  “What a thoughtful group of young people who pulled together to raise money to help cancer patients in their time of need.”
