Nurse Navigator Leads the Way for Cancer Patients
Nancy Topham, Nurse Navigator
Cancer care is a disjointed world. After patients are given the news that they have cancer, they are often in shock and suddenly dealing with multiple health care providers: medical oncologists, radiologists, pharmacists, surgeons, nutritionists and sometimes psychologists.
Itís a difficult world to wade through even when thinking clearly, and for those reeling from a cancer diagnosis, it can seem daunting.
Thatís where Nancy Topham, RN, BSN, OCN will step in. Nancy, the new Nurse Navigator for St. Maryís of Michigan, will guide patients and families through the cancer treatment process. She will provide education to empower patients to make informed treatment decisions and will remain a support system throughout the patientís treatment.
Nancy, an oncology certified nurse, will serve as our "go-to" person by assisting patients with needs, be it answering questions, helping with financial or transportation issues. For now, Nancy will mainly be focused on breast cancer and lung cancer patients.
Nancy is a veteran when it comes to cancer care and to St. Maryís of Michigan; she started working in the oncology unit here in 1977. She has spent the past four years at the Oncology Hematology Associates of Saginaw Valley and now has returned to St. Maryís for her dream job.
For more information or to contact Nancy, call 497-3109. Her office is located in the Imaging Department at Towne Centre.
