St. Mary's Raises Flag in Honor of Organ Donors & Their Families
The Third Annual Donate Life Flag Raising Ceremony took place today, Friday, June 4 at 1 p.m. on the main campus. The ceremony began in the chapel before proceeding outside in a light mist of rain for the Donate Life flag raising to honor the memory of the St. Mary’s of Michigan patients who have given the gift of life to others through their organ and tissue donations.
Nearly 15 donors were represented by many family members during the ceremony.
Currently, more than 2,961 Michigan residents are waiting to receive life-saving hearts, livers, lungs, kidneys and other organs. Last year in Michigan, 864 organs were transplanted. Even though hundreds of lives were saved in result of these donations, it still was not enough to meet the growing need for organs and tissues in the state.
More than 240,000 people joined the Michigan Organ Donor Registry in 2009. Currently, of the state’s 10 million residents, about 1.8 million are registered donors.
Those wishing to make a commitment to give the gift of life can register at giftoflifemichigan.org or at any Secretary of State branch office. For more information or to join the Donor Registry by phone, call 800-482-4881
