New services: Wound & Hyperbaric Center and Bariatric Center

Wound & Hyperbaric Center

St. Mary's of Michigan is preparing to welcome the arrival of two state-of-the-art hyperbaric oxygen therapy chambers. This highly effective, painless new therapy being offered is a powerful treatment for patients with chronic, non-healing wounds. Hyperbaric therapy speeds up the natural healing process, allowing even the most difficult chronic wounds to heal. Thehyperbaric oxygen chambers generate a 100% oxygen environment. The high level of oxygen under pressure creates oxygen-rich blood that circulates throughout the body, releasing stem cells and substances called growth factors that promote faster healing for many types of wounds including soft tissue injuries.

Treatments are typically administered for 90 minutes, once per day, five times a week, for approximately six weeks. Hyperbaric therapy is ideal for patients who are dealing with chronic Osteomyelitis, radiation damage, Diabetic ulcers, failing skin grafts, non-healing surgical wounds, crush injury, acute vascular insufficiency and bone infection. Hyperbaric therapy can also be used for other health-related issues not included in the list above.

Patients will be able to listen to music, watch television, sleep and talk with their clinician to ensure a high level of comfort during treatments.

The Wound and Hyperbaric Center will be located at Towne Centre on the second floor (in the existing pain clinic space). The opening is tentatively scheduled for mid-May.

Bariatric Center

Being overweight can be deadly. For those who struggle with obesity, St. Mary's of Michigan is now offering a new weight loss program. If all other methods, including diet and exercise, have been unsuccessful, St. Mary's wants to provide the community with another option.

The new Bariatric Center will provide comprehensive, personalized care to transform the health of those in need. The program includes:
Bariatric surgery operations using advanced minimally invasive techniques such as laparoscopic gastric bypass and laparoscopic adjustable banding pre-surgery evaluation and preparation comprehensive emotional and relational support (in partnership with Child & Family Services) extensive nutritional and exercise counseling post-surgery physical and exercise therapy long-term weight management
Bariatric surgery has proven to be effective by improving the health of individuals and controlling many obesity-related medical conditions. Obesity-related medical problems include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. Obesity is the number-one leading cause of preventable death, recently surpassing tobacco use, and is related to approximately 300,000 deaths per year in the United States.

People who may qualify for bariatric surgery include individuals with a body mass index of 40 and above or 35 and above with serious obesity-related medical problems, who are age 18 and older, and who have previously been unsuccessful with non-surgical weight loss strategies.

Bariatric surgery procedures are only done when deemed medically necessary and all non-surgical options have been exhausted.

The goal of our bariatric program is to improve health, improve quality of life and increase lifespan. Through our continued commitment to support physician autonomy through partnership rather than employment, we will work with several skilled surgeons, all expertly trained in minimally invasive bariatric surgery.

St. Mary's is offering free informational seminars to educate those interested in the weight loss option. To register for a seminar or learn more about the bariatric program, call 907-8716 or email bariatrics@stmarysofmichigan.org.

We are very excited about starting the Wound & Hyperbaric Center and the Bariatric Center here at St. Mary's. We continue to demonstrate commitment to growth and presence within the community through our latest offering to our patients. We feel that these programs will be of great benefit to our community as well as our associates.
