Bringing Robotic Surgery to Our Operating Rooms

Dr. Jensen and Dr. Kershen by the da Vinci
The future is now at St. Maryís of Michigan.  The medical center becomes the first hospital in the entire state North of Flint to purchase the da Vinci Surgical System.  da Vinci is a sophisticated robotic device designed to enable complex surgery using a minimally invasive approach.  State-of-the-art robotic technology translates the surgeonís hand movements into even more precise and exact surgical capabilities.

The da Vinci Surgic

The da Vinci Surgical System
al System will be used for prostate removal at St. Maryís of Michigan and the technology will bring a new level of sophistication to the operating room.  For the patient, a da Vinci procedure will offer all the benefits of a minimally invasive procedure, including less pain and less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay, a quicker recovery and faster return to normal daily activities.  In addition, the da Vinci will mean a lesser risk of incontinence and impotence following prostate surgery.

St. Maryís of Michigan Urologists Dr. Steven Jensen and Dr. Glen Kershen are fully trained on the da Vinci.  They will perform surgeries seated at a console, with eyes and hands positioned in line with the instruments.  To move the instruments, the surgeon simply moves his hands.

The $1.5 million da Vinci Surgical System was purchased through a generous donation by the St. Maryís of Michigan Foundation.
