FlightCare U.S. Flag Arrives Special Delivery from Iraq
FlightCare Nurse Cindy Heaton Holds U.S. Flag
FlightCare Nurse Cindy Heaton couldn’t believe her eyes when she opened a package marked Priority Mail just two days after the Fourth of July. The package was delivered to the FlightCare crew quarters at the Northwest corner of the St. Mary’s of Michigan campus.
Inside she found a U.S. flag and a certificate from Charlie Company, 5th
Airborne Division based in Iraq. The items came from former FlightCare Paramedic David Jankowiak who is now a Blackhawk helicopter pilot serving in Tikrit. The certificate stated that the flag had flown over the military base at Tikrit on May 31 and had been presented to FlightCare as a token of appreciation and support. “I was very surprised and honored that he would send us something like this,” Cindy says. “It’s an honor to get one of these flags, it’s special.”
It didn’t take long for Cindy and pilot Rick Bohlinger to mount the Stars and Stripes on the front of the FlightCare crew quarters where it is now proudly displayed. And as for David Jankowiak? Cindy says he plans on coming back to St. Mary’s of Michigan when his enlistment is finished…not as a paramedic, but as a FlightCare pilot.
