Substantial grant received for expansion of GreenHouse Gathering Place
The GreenHouse Gathering Place
St. Mary’s of Michigan has received a matching grant in the amount of $500,000 from Mission & Ministry, Inc in Evansville, Indiana for the expansion of the GreenHouse Gathering Place. The grant will enable the GreenHouse, a community resource center located on Emerson Street in Saginaw’s Cathedral District, to more than triple the existing space to over 7000 square feet. So far, $268,790 has already been raised to meet the $500,000 match.
The projected cost of the project is 1.1 million dollars and groundbreaking is tentatively set for the spring of 2008. The addition will include a larger exercise room with toilets and showers, a children’s room with toys, a commercial kitchen, and a meeting room capable of holding 180 people. “We are absolutely thrilled,” says Cherie Sammis, Vice President for Mission Services at St. Mary’s of Michigan. “This will mean so much to the residents of Saginaw, all of whom will be able to use the services offered at the expanded GreenHouse Gathering Place."
Also available at the GreenHouse are washers and dryers, a computer resource room, and educational classes. People who use the GreenHouse are not charged a fee, but they often donate their time to clean and maintain the building. The GreenHouse Gathering Place opened eight years ago and on some days it is utilized by close to 100 people.
