| Common Preparatory Instructions
PET/CT
All patients should stop at Outpatient Admitting upon arrival for their procedure. While the physician who orders your imaging procedure will give you detailed instructions about preparing for your test, the following are guidelines to ensure the best results.
PET/CT
• No food 12 hours prior if A.M. appointment, excluding water. • If afternoon appointment, limit breakfast to light, low carb (no sugar). No food at least 4 hours prior to exam, excluding water. • Low carb, high protein meals the day before exam (no pasta, rice, bread, or potatoes). • Drink at least 48 oz. of water the day before exam and 24-48 oz. the day of exam. • Wear loose fitting clothing. No heavy buckles or metal components. • No strenuous exercise the day before exam. • If breastfeeding, pump ahead at least a two-day supply. After exam, express and discard milk for 48 hours. • No alcohol, tobacco or caffeine 24 hours prior to appointment. • No contact with children under 12 for 24 hours after appointment. • Arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment. • Bring your insurance cards, previous CT scans, X-rays, and PET scans, pathology reports, medical history.

MRI
• Bring X-rays if having spine, extremity, or chest. • Weight not to exceed 290 pounds.

Ultrasound
Gallbladder, pancreas, biliary tract
• No food or water for 8 hours before exam.
Pelvis and/or obstetrical
• Bladder must be full for exam. • Drink 32 oz. 1 hour before exam to fill bladder. |

CT Scan
Kidney, liver, pancreas, spleen, gallbladder, abdomen, pelvis
• Arrive 90 minutes before scheduled appointment for first drink.

Nuclear Medicine
Hepatobiliary
• No food or water 4-6 hours before exam. • No pain medication 4 hours before exam.
Thallium stress test
• No food or water 4-6 hours before exam.
Stress muga
• No food or water 4-6 hours before exam.
Cisternogram
• Pre-admission required.
Thyroid
• No thyroid medications for 3-4 weeks before exam. • No radiographic contrast injection (IVP, angiogram, CT, myelogram) for 3 weeks before exam. • No telepaque (gallbladder contrast) for 3-4 months before exam. |

X-ray
Mammogram
• Schedule exam at least 1 week after period. • No deodorant. • Bring previous mammography films if they were taken at another facility.
Barium enema
• Obtain a bowel prep kit from your local pharmacy or from the St. Mary's of Michigan Radiology Department at least two days before exam. • Follow the instructions in the prep kit. Do not omit any steps.
Intravenous pyelogram (IVP) • 2-1/2 oz. X-prep liquid between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. day before appointment. • No solid food after X-prep. • Clear liquid supper day before appointment. • Fluid allowed in evening and in morning before exam.
Esophagram, upper GI series, small bowel
• No food or water after 10:30 p.m. night before exam. • No breakfast.
Tomograms
• Bring plain films.
Breast localization
• Bring previous mammography films.
