Details: The 2013 Mission of Mercy program will represent Michigan dentistry’s largest dental access event to date. A Mission of Mercy (MOM) is a gathering of volunteer dental professionals and staff who hold free, two-day temporary dental clinics. Services provided typically include cleanings, fillings, extractions, some oral surgery, some root canals, denture repair, and oral hygiene education. There is also a pharmacy at the event to dispense free pain medications as prescribed by the treating dentist. All services are provided on a first-come, first-serve basis, and typically, lines of people will be forming in the middle of the night in all kinds of weather.
The doors open at 5 a.m. each day— 1,000 tickets are handed out and the door closes within a few hours as the facility fills up with patients. The clinic closes at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and a total of 2,000 patients receive treatment over the course of the event.
The goals for Mission of Mercy are to provide free, critical dental care with a priority on treating patients in pain and with infections; raise public awareness of the barriers to dental care faced by low-income adults and children; and to challenge patients, policymakers and dental professionals to work together to make healthy choices that will improve Michigan residents’ oral health.
