At St. Mary's of Michigan Standish Hospital, ultrasound is another healing-edge technology we employ to see inside the body to more effectively diagnose and treat our patients.
An ultrasound consists of high frequency sound waves that are used to evaluate and record images of internal organs and examine blood flow. Exams include:
  • Abdominal
  • Small Parts (Thyroid, Testicular, Breasts)
  • Pelvic (with Transvaginal capabilities)

Vascular and Arterial Imaging
Real-time images with color flow and Doppler waveforms are used to evaluate the venous and arterial systems of the body. This allows doctors to examine blood flow, locate blockages, detect clots or find enlarged arteries. It helps diagnose leg or arm pain caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD) and peripheral vascular disease (PVD). It also helps prevent stroke by examining the vessels that supply blood to the brain.
An echocardiogram is an ultrasound used to examine the heart. It provides a cross-sectional "slice" of the beating heart, including the chambers, valves and the major blood vessels that exit from the left and right ventricle.
  • Stress-Echo: Evaluation of the heart before and immediately after physical exercise utilizing digital memory to determine if a problem exists.
  • Dobutamine Stress Echo: A pharmacological way to stress the heart for those patients who, because of physical limitations, cannot walk on the treadmill.
  • Transesophageal Echocardiogram: Specialized ultrasound procedure to better evaluate certain structures of the heart not well seen on some patients due to physical structure or certain lung conditions.
